Ambulances converged on the scene of an accident in a northwest Philly neighborhood around 10:30 p.m., April 24, 2019, and took six of the cars’ occupants to the hospital with at least one in serious condition.

According to police at the scene, the accident happened on the 8900 block of Ridge Avenue when four cars collided. Police closed the road until the injured were taken to the hospital and investigators finished processing the scene. It’s unknown at this time how the accident occurred.

Multi-Vehicle Crashes

Multi-vehicle crashed are dangerous and can cause serious injuries to those involved. In a typical accident, there is one impact between the vehicles and maybe another if either vehicle hits another object. However, in a multi-car crash, there is often a primary impact and then secondary impacts as more cars become involved.

The secondary crashes can happen after the primary impact as cars pile into each other unable to slow down or avoid the cars that have crashed. These secondary crashes add to the risk of serious injury.

How is Fault Determined?

At the time of the accident, fault doesn’t seem as important as the safety of the injured victims. However, once the bills begin piling up, the injured begins to worry about how they are going to make ends meet especially with missed time from work.

In a multi-car accident, the law looks at each collision to determine the fault of that impact. This can lead to a complex set of circumstances as some drivers might be a victim in one crash and the at-fault driver in another impact. This happens a lot when someone rear-ends another car and then is rear-ended.

The law requires an injured person to prove negligence on the part of the alleged at-fault driver. In chain-reaction crashes, this can become a problem when a car collides and pushes one of the cars into another. Is that new car responsible for both cars? Or is each driver liable for the car in front of them?

The law requires that each person seeking compensation for another driver to prove that the driver was negligent and caused their injuries.

Injuries in Multi-Vehicle Crashes

Multi-car accidents can result in serious injuries, with some who made it unscathed after the first collision and then become injured after the second or third. In one of these crashes, the type of injury can be important, and it takes someone with experience with all types of injuries to get the compensation allowed under the law. Some of these common injuries are:

  • Thoracic Spine Injury (Whiplash)
  • Blunt Force Trauma
  • Head Injuries/Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Broken Bones (Ribs, Wrists most common)
  • Internal Injuries/Bleeding
  • Air bag injuries

Do I Need an Attorney?

It’s up to each injured person whether they get an attorney. However, in multi-car wrecks, there are typically several insurance companies covering the many vehicles, and each one is going to point the finger at the other where liability is concerned.

You need to talk to an attorney today to go over your case and find out how best to get the compensation you deserve for your injuries. Don’t talk to a cookie-cutter one size fits all firm, but get help form a firm that has a track record of helping those injured in truck accidents.
