A male driver struck two cars causing one to flip killing both occupants and then fled the scene. The accident happened Saturday night April 20, 2019, when a  Chevrolet Camaro sped down Red Lion Road  and rear-ended a car stopped at a red light at the Busleton Avenue intersection.

The Camaro then careened off the first car and T-boned a car that had entered the intersection, hitting it so hard that it flipped over killing a 50-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman who were in the car. The flipped car then struck another can that had been traveling behind it causing two additional cars to collide making a total of six cars involved in the crash.

According to police at the scene, there were five people taken to the hospital not including the two who died. The driver of the Camaro got out of the car and hopped into a waiting white Lexus GS which then drove off.

Hit-and-Run Crashes

Hit-and-crashes create significant problems for the victims by increasing the risk of further injury and increasing the pain and anguish of the victims. The increased risk of further injury comes in cases where there is a delay in treatment for the injured because the driver that left the scene did not call for help or render aid to the victims.

Many times, victims of a hit-and-run feel a greater level of anxiety as they have been victimized again when the driver flees.

Injuries at Further Risk in a Hit-and-Run

There are many types of injuries that can happen in a hit-and-run with some putting the victim at higher risk of death or more serious injury. They are:

  • Neck Injuries: Neck injuries need to be stabilized quickly and delays might cause more problems.
  • Deep lacerations: Any loss-of-blood injuries can put the victim in danger if first aid is delayed.
  • Punctured Lungs: Broken ribs can lead to a punctured lung which can deprive a person of their ability to breath and get oxygen.
  • Heart Attack: The stress of an accident can cause a heart attack, and a quick response from EMS can make a difference.
  • Pregnancy/Delivery: An accident can put a pregnant woman into labor, and the quicker the response, the more likely there will be a good outcome.

Liability in a Hit-and-Run

Another increase in anxiety and stress for the victims of a hit-and-run comes when the issue of liability comes up. When the at-fault driver has fled then that driver’s insurance company also unknown leaving the victims to fend for themselves, again.

However, there are some resources that someone might be able to use to compensate them for their injuries if the driver is never found:

  • Medpay: This is a provision that drivers can get on their own policy that will pay for medical bills regardless of who is at fault or who is injured so long as the insured or their vehicle is involved.
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This works similar to medpay, but it pays medical bills and other damages like pain and suffering and loss of wages. It also pays out regardless of who was injured or at fault so long at the insured or their vehicle is involved.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured (UM/UIM): Most insurance policies have uninsured/underinsured provisions that will pay those covered by the policy for all personal injury damages if the other driver is underinsured or has no insurance. This can include when a hit-and-run driver is never found, so long as they were at fault in the accident.

Pennsylvania Auto Insurance

In Florida, drivers are required to have either medpay or PIP, and because PIP pays for medical bills as well as other damages if a driver chooses PIP, then medpay is unnecessary. Pennsylvania does not require UM/UIM and drivers who want this can get it on their insurance as an added provision.
