A Chevy Camaro collided with a cement truck on Lemekiln Pike and Upper State Road around 10 a.m. Thursday, February 28, 2019. Soon after, two more vehicles collided with both the Camaro and the cement truck injuring the driver of the Camaro.

According to authorities at the scene, EMS had to cut the roof off of the Camaro to rescue the driver trapped inside. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The cement truck laid on its side leaking some sort of fluid, and authorities called in a hazardous materials unit to clean up the mess.

Cement Truck Accidents

A fully loaded cement truck can weigh almost 70,000 lbs which outweighs a typical passenger car by almost 20 times. This can be a problem for other vehicles on the road. According to a study by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, each year, commercial truck accidents make up 10 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities, yet the only make up 5 percent of all vehicles on the road.  Also 90 percent of the fatalities were people other than the truck driver.

Reasons Truck are Dangerous

The obvious is that trucks are big and heavy. This is true which means that when something tangles with a truck, the other thing usually comes out on the wrong end. However, there are other reasons why trucks involve so many fatalities. Some of the most common factors are:

  • Blind Spots: Trucks have numerous “No go zones” or blind spots making it dangerous to travel around them.
  • Less maneuverable: Trucks take much more time and distance to stop, and they can’t swerve or change directions very quickly.
  • Driver fatigue: Many times truck drivers drive longer than allowed by law or company rules making for fatigued drivers.
  • Impairment: Impairment by the truck driver contributed to five percent of all truck fatalities, which is less than those of passenger cars (20 percent) but still accounts for over 210 deaths a year by impaired truck drivers.
  • Lack of Education/Training: Some accidents are caused by inexperienced truck drivers, however, in over 65 percent of all large truck-related accident, the fault was the non-truck driver. Many people don’t understand how dangerous trucks are and to not take precautions.

Common Injuries in Truck Accidents

Large truck accidents are noted for their high impact and high damage to the other vehicle. Even a small impact with a large truck can result in significant damage to the vehicle and injury to the driver. Some of the injuries common to these accidents are:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury
  • Broken Bones (legs, wrists ribs most common)
  • Deep Contusions
